Assessment

As a Licensed Educational Psychologist, I will evaluate your child's skills through formal assessment in all areas of concern. This may include academic, behavioral, cognitive, processing, social-emotional, and adaptive testing. This evaluation involves collecting information, in a valid and reliable way, from several different sources, including the student, family, school, outside agencies, and any community organizations working with your child.

This assessment may be used to determine possible interventions and recommendations in relation to educational eligibilities (see right). It may or may not be used by your child's school district to determine school-based eligibility, services, and placement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need a psycho-educational assessment?

There are many reasons why a child would benefit from a formal psychological assessment:

  1. Student consistently struggles in school.
  2. Student's school performance varies. For example, she does well on one test, but fails another; she studies and understands information at home, then fails at school; she suddenly starts having significant difficulty; she does well in some areas, but is falling behind in others.
  3. Student has behavior or social-emotional difficulties.

Doesn't the school system do psycho-educational assessments for free?

Yes. However, sometimes parents want a second opinion to the school district's assessment or choose not to go through the public school system at all.

Educational Eligibilities:

  • Specific Learning Disability (SLD)
  • Processing Disorders
  • Autism
  • Other Health Impairment (OHI)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Intellectual Disability (ID)
  • Emotional Disturbance (ED)

What is the best age/grade for a child to get an assessment?

There is no "best" age or grade. An assessment at any age will give parents more information about how their child learns and what is the best way for him or her to be successful. Research shows that early intervention leads to greater success in later years.
